Guttering Shawlands
Roofline Glasgow provide a gutter replacement service to the Shawlands area.
Why do we need gutters?
Gutters are now seen as an integral part of the exterior of any property, but why were they invented? And what common problems can be overcome and how…
Capturing rainwater has been recognised across generations and cultures as essential; before water was ‘on the mains, generations passed needed to collect and store this valuable rainwater for drinking, cooking and washing. Recognising that the rain cascading from the rooftops was a scarce commodity wooden guttering and downspouts were invented. Gradually, over time, the wooden gutters were lined with zinc; the early prototypes of modern guttering for your Shawlands property were created!
And from here gutters and downspouts were improved even more
The 20th century saw the guttering material of choice become steel, an alloy of iron and carbon, along with other ingredients. A strong material, it had increased resistance to rot, unlike the earlier wooden guttering. But, most Shawlands properties will still have aluminium guttering, a lighter version than steel but still as effective.
Gradually, guttering developed to become seamless and far more effective at quickly channelling off rainwater, and storing in water butts, a habit once again coming back into fashion with most homeowners, not just keen gardeners.
The majority of guttering across properties today are plastic, supplied and fitted in a variety of colours to complement the exterior of a property. Virtually leak proof, many homeowners are opting to replace aluminium guttering that requires painting, for the low maintenance plastic version.
Replace or maintain?
Should gutters starts leaking, it is time to get a specialist guttering and roofline company to come and assess the system; occasionally, replacement is recommended but it might be prudent to maintain the gutters, as well as replace certain components.
There are many problems that can occur;
- Debris can build up in the gutters, eventually decomposing to form a hard clump that clogs the gutter
- This causes the water to ‘pool’ or simply overflow the gutter channel
- Pooling water is heavy and many customers report guttering that sags under the weight
Not dealing with clogged or damaged gutters can cause a whole heap of problems, from unsightly staining down exterior walls to flooding basements, or foundations cracking and heaving.
Why repairing, maintaining or replacing guttering at your property is important
Without gutters you home would not be the dry, damp-free place that you want it to be. Gutters perform a small but essential function. Water is erosive over time hence noticing you have a problem means you need to get it repaired or replaced sooner rather than later.
