Capturing rainwater has been recognised across generations and cultures as essential; before water was ‘on the mains, generations passed needed to collect and store this valuable rainwater for drinking, cooking and washing. Recognising that the rain cascading from the rooftops was a scarce commodity wooden guttering and downspouts were invented.  Gradually, over time, the wooden gutters were lined with zinc; the early prototypes of modern guttering for your Shawlands property were created!

The 20th century saw the guttering material of choice become steel, an alloy of iron and carbon, along with other ingredients. A strong material, it had increased resistance to rot, unlike the earlier wooden guttering.
