Replacing guttering at your property – a DIY job or one for the professionals
Guttering is an important component of the roofline on any property; it needs to be well-maintained, free from debris allowing rainwater to run quickly and smoothly from the exterior of the building.
Many properties still have older styles and materials of guttering and, if they are still performing well and look in good condition, not detracting from the overall appearance of your home, there is no need to replace as such. But, if you feel it is time for a change, then having the guttering replaced is one way of doing this.
Many guttering customers choose to have their guttering replaced when they are having work done on the roof or other roofline components. There are many choices you have to make when it comes to replacing your guttering, all of which will affect cost such as;
- Material
- Types of guttering
- Ease of access for working on it
- And the size of your home
Materials
Many guttering customers opt for their replacement gutters to be plastic; often cheaper than other materials, they are light and fit well to the property. There are various colours too, not just black! They also need less maintenance that other, such as metal, as they do not need painting etc. Apart from cleaning and removing debris, very little maintenance is required.
Cast iron, aluminium and steel are three materials that are still available for replacement guttering but are considerably more expensive.
Types
There are different types or shapes to guttering for your home too; we will be pleased to show the half round, deep flow, square ogee shaped gutters, helping you select the right one for your property.
DIY job or not?
It depends on your skill set, the time you have on your hands as well as your head for heights. Replacing guttering on your home requires working at height and it is important to be safe; we suggest that if you are unsure, then it will be prudent to invest in a professional roofline company, such as ourselves.
The guttering also needs to interlock and be fitted at an angle that encourages run off of rainwater quickly and easily. Too steep an angle, and water will gush uncontrollably; too straight and water will pool, the weight of which will cause the guttering to sag in areas.
