Winter Roofing Checks
29 November 2022
As the temperature begins to drop, it is important to prepare your home for winter weather. One of the most important steps you can take to protect your home is to make sure your roof is ready for the cold months ahead.
Checking Your Roof Yourself
If you feel comfortable performing a visual inspection of your roof, here are some things you should look out for:
- Make sure that all of the shingles are in place and not missing or damaged. Check overall shape; if they appear curled or cracked, they may need to be replaced.
- Look around the chimney and other vents on the roof and make sure there isn’t a buildup of debris or leaves that could block ventilation.
- Check for signs of water damage such as discolouration or stains on your ceiling or walls inside the house. This could indicate a leaky roof, which often happens when shingles start coming loose from age, extreme weather conditions, or improper installation.
- Inspect gutters and downspouts for any clogs from leaves or other organic matter that could prevent melting snow from draining properly off of your roof.
Professional Roofers
If you are not comfortable checking your roof, hiring a professional roofer can give you peace of mind that everything is in order before winter arrives. Professional contractors will have access to safety equipment like ladders and harnesses so they can inspect every inch of your roof without risking their safety.
In addition to checking for missing or damaged shingles and clogged gutters, they can also check flashing (the metal strips around vents, skylights, and chimneys) as well as sealants around pipes or other openings on the rooftop. They will also be able to see if anything needs replacing due to normal wear and tear over time—which can help prevent big problems later on down the road!
